I really was starting to dread what would happen if they were allowed to stay. I was sure that they would just keep producing Hormel / Dolly sites, and that others would do the same. I was even considering following suit in tactics, and God knows that would hurt like a slide down an emery sheet.
Folks - Reporting to GG does work :-)
GG - If you are watching over this from your cloud, thanks.
:-)
Ps Are the other (2nd and 3rd group also going to get the same? - I know you said you have to write it as code so that the algo takes care of other such cases right?)
This Spam group had 5 near identical sites (with virtually the same graphics and html, and with exact identical content). They also had grotty (meaningless) content pages ("related" pages to get relevance - but where the information was not usable by a real person - it was just there for the search engines). Added to this, they ran link farms (mass reciprocal link exchanges, including with mostly off topic sites).
Have you ever eaten Spam? I have. I tried frying it, adding garlic to it, chilli, pepper, anything and everything. And you know what, it still tasted of Spam. That came flashing back to me when I saw these guys 5 sites (I am sure they had more climbing the rankings).
Crosslinked, keyword-stuffed, multiple SERPS on key phrases.
All now grey-barred.
Their absence was pointed out by a colleague, so I don't know when exactly it happened (I haven't been checking it, too much to do on my own site).
I would advise: report clearly, follow the guidelines, let Google decide, be patient, forget about it.

to submit spam report, did so and then nothing. Although to be fair don't know how long these things take. And I may have made mistake in report by pointing finger at likely culprit without real proof, don't know.
Gist of it was that on a three word search phrase 7 out of top 100 results had basically same serps description and all led to totally blank pages. I submitted all 7 in spam report. One of them had some reference to child porn which besides being waaaay off topic is ILLEGAL. Actually it's gotten worse since, one of the pages has jumped from second page to first page, number 4. I'm just waiting for one of them to take top spot.........
However, they must have a system for prioritising and I guess that 7 out of 100 for a three-word phrase may not seem as serious as say 5 out of top 5, 7 out of top ten etc for say a two-word phrase.
I would bear in mind also that it only webmasters and those with obsessive-compulsive disorder who would bother to search through 100 results...
;-)
The Spammers now are paying for adwords to be seen. So Google wins (they make cake), Surfers win (because they only have one slice of these people's Spam, not the whole can), and other webmasters win (cause they are not drowned in Spam).
:-) Thanks GG :-)
Ps I did say thanks before, but admin (quite rightfully I am sure) edited my original posting's title.
