I see 30k + spam sites, many of them being in the top 20 search results, all having .biz .info .ws

Seems to me like a boost for for these domains.
I will give it a try with a .info

.ws sites are the finest on the web. My main domain is in fact a .ws. ;) Due to the fact slimy domain name speculators are hoarding the .com, .net and .org on this critical keyword for some reason that baffles me. Probably the reason that you are seeing so many of these high in the SERPs is domain name speculators and others having already snatched up the keyword stuffed domain names that Google loves so much. Thus, getting a good keyword domain name can mean having to go out into Western Samoan namespace.

It's all spam. ;)

Used to be we'd use .info's because the toolbar never showed the backlinks...they fixed it though. So yeah...most .info's are probably spam :)

I'd say about 90% of the .biz .info .ws domains are throwaway spam domains. Sheer trash the clutters up the first page of the SERPS.

Not to confuse though: Google does not give any preference to any TLDs. a .com, .net, .biz, .fr, .es, .ws....it's all the same rankingwise.
Might get to the point that some TLDs get discounted, or more often handchecked, but at this point all TLDs are equal before the algo.

I read somewhere that .info's are cheaper than com's or net's.
As spammers are more likely to register lots of (hopefully short lasting) domains, probably it makes a difference for them to save a few $$$s by registering .info's.

Nope. In fact I was pissed when I found out on renewal that .ws domains now cost more than .coms. Because of numerous established links, etc. I'm stuck out here in Western Samoan namespace for good. If I had only known back then the way to go was keyword1-keyword2-keyword3.org to do well on Google. The only downside there is that a triple keyword stuffed domain like that comes across to me as tacky. I wanted to project a serious image for the main site, and I decided to go with keyword1.ws.
