Ok, so the deep crawl has started. I am in dire need of a memory upgrade on my web server, as swap space is being used. The last Googledance gave me enough new traffic to be at "the edge" memory wise.

Is it safe to take the machine offline for 10-20 minutes to add RAM to the machine?

Will googlebot leave me and not come back this month? I am sure I am not the first person to potentially have this problem. For users, if it was a big deal (which it isn't) I could switch the DNS to a backup server...but google's not good about DNS updates.

It is a dedicated server at a hosting provider, so I can't have a backup with the same IP during the update, or anything like that.

What should I do?

Thanks for any help,

-Pete

PS:
I have 5 sites on the server, 3 of which are getting about 60 requests per hour right now from deepbot. It should be at about 30-60 (or more) requests per minute per near the end of the crawl.

If you can get away with it I would wait. I had a short down time a few crawls back and I lost half my site in the index. They say they come back looking for 404s but i am not sure that you don't get those pages stuck in everflux for the month.

I agree, if you can wait, I would!

My server crashed 3 times (mind you it has never done this, and each time was only for 20 minutes or so)
But I lost all but 1 listing for a solid month til the Feb. crawl/update.

good luch I hope you make it. :-)
