OK Linking to search results, directory pages?

Will linking to search results that show your site help or hurt?

I see a number of sites that from their homepage link back to Google and other SE's results or directory pages like this:

We're #1 on Google! see <keyword>

(which links to directory-google-com-keyword)

--OR--

Find more results on keyword at <google> <yahoo> <etc>

(which links to search-results on keyword)

Will this approach help boost your listing by creating reciprocal links if you're on the page linked to? Can it hurt you? (as a nonprofit site I'm not concerned about competitors)

thanks for your thoughts.

Hello and welcome to WebMasterWorld treeline,

This will not harm your listing, as for doing it any good am not sure! It might give it a slight advantage over others with a reciprocal link in place :)

my money is on it being part of 2 things:

1, Old wives tale

2, In cases where they are doing to a directory rather than SERPS, than they could be trying to give "that" page a boost for certain resons.

#1 is what I think though.

Would think that unless a bit of surgery is done most of the raw urls with search strings would have too many parameters for Google to follow in the first place.
