PR going haywire... is this normal?

PR jumping back and forth - is this normal for a re-index?

For the last day or so the PR of my homepage goes up and down - seemingly arbitrarily - from 8 to 7, back to 8 again and back to 7 again and so on.

Sometimes I get the same PR on the toolbar if I enter the URL as www.mydomain.com, www.mydomain.com/ and www.mydomain.com/index.html
and sometimes it changes...

This is having an effect on all the other pages: PR7s are jumping down to 6s and back up to 7s and so on with PR6s.

I've never noticed this with a Google Update before so I want to know is something up with my site or are all site-owners experiencing something similar?

If the latter, is this usual (and I've just missed it before)? Or is it related to the new algo?

PR always jumps around a bit during the update - this is simply the new PR taking its time to replace the old PR. That said, this update seems to be a bit more erratic than usual, and the changes seem to be taking longer, but I don't think it's anything too out of the ordinary.

It's enough to drive a person nuts. The PR jig worries me more than anything else. If my PR goes down by one on my root level homepage it will affect all the other pages I have that are linked from that homepage. I suspect most of them will go down one PR point too. Quite depressing.

This is all from losing a whopping 100 backlinks on that crucial page. I sure wish I knew what backlinks were dropped and if there is anything I could do to undo the damage.

None of my other sites has such a major drop in backlinks.
