Penalized on some search terms, not others?

Is this possible?

I'm having real trouble with a new site. I have worked tirelessly to get it listed, even going to the length of a total rebuild which has just been indexed on the new update.

My problem is this. The new update has recognised many of my new keyword combinations giving me a good few nice top 5 listings BUT for a number of key search terms I am nowhere and i have tried everything.

I have been in this game a long time & give or take a few tries my site are normally very succesfully listed but i am nearing admitting defeat here and switching the whole site to another domain and IP and trying again.

Is it possible for goole to bar / penalise you on some terms but not others. I always thought a ban / penalty was site wide

Google bomb comes to mind.

Do a high percentages of Inbound "anchor texts" for those phrases have the exact smae text from everywhere.

basically what I am trying to say is, that its possible to have ceratin keywords not show up in serps if it looks to have too many inbound links with the EXACT anchor text.

No, I don't think the problem is related to any penalties.
I would look into internal linking, refining of titles, indhort reevaluation of on page/in site factors.
Also looking into competitiveness of the phrases might give you some ideas.
Did you check if really all pages are fully indexed, including descriptions?

shak & heini - thanks for the reponses - sorry for the delay in getting back

I think you hit the nail on the head with the "anchor links" idea but looking at it my problem is not too many inbound links with specific reference to the key words - its a lack of now i look at it...

I have had problems before with the default / home pages of sites. Other areas of my sites have always had anchor links very specific to an area of the site ie the basic "blue widget" link leads to the "blue widget" section of the site but with my home pages i have optimised for a search term but have had no exact anchor link depicting the search term as links to the home page have always come from a generic "home" link (ie not specific to the search term).

I hope that made sense - i think you guys may well have cracked it - well you've at least given me a new angle i can exploit before mr. deep crawler arrives

many thanks

Eric, a quick suggestion: you might head over to the Link development forum. There are some immensly interesting threads on internal linkage.
