How many backlinks should you have?

Hi,

I was just thinking about backlinks and if they are considered Spam, when there too much of them. One of my sites now has about 150 Links from other sites. No PR0 Sites or anything "illegal" . But these some of these sites have nothing to do with my site, the webmasters just ask me to change links and I said "Why not?". Maybe this is a little bit dangerous because Google could consider it as Spam. Or are only Backlinks from Linkfarms considered Spam. Or only form Linktrading Platforms?
And how many links are you allowed to have? In my opinion this shouldn't be a factor for penalty's because I have no influence on how many people link to my sites.

As you say, you have no influence on who or what links to you.

I have some on-line type resources that get linked to from very strange places.

If Google ever gets savy enough to really understand theme related linking, the good links will help you more. The non-related links will just be non-related links.

Better have a Pagerank 7 index-page with 2000 back-links of which most are theme related, than to have a Pagerank 7 index-page with 20 back-links, of which one bought Pagerank 9 link.
