this is usually when relevancy kicks in, and is picked up by Google.
eg: you search for "business loans"
and it returns 2 results from same site.
1, being home page for a business loans company
2, being a specific page dealing with business loans from the same company.
not sure whether that makes sense, but its nearly 2am, and I just got out of bed after having a bad dream about Overture (real weird)

eg, for the search term 'widget' you have two pages which, when ranked by Google for that term, would be results no 3 and no 9. On a page of ten results, instead of showing your no 9 placing and ending up with results from the same domains spread all over the place, Google gives you your no 3 placement, and indents the next page immediately after.
If your two pages would have ranked at no's 3 and 14, you would only have the no 3 placement show on a page of ten results.
BUT, if the user asks Google to show 20 results on a page, your no3 would show up with your no 14 indented below it.
It's a good way of keeping the serps clean and unspammy from Google's end, while relating to the searcher that this site with the indented results has at least two pages that are quite relevant to what you're looking for.
:) Makes it a good idea to have two similarly optimised pages available for your keywords too.
