Probably not a penalty if you dropped to page 3 and not off the chart. I would remove the hidden links asap. You can get into some real trouble with them without a whole lot of benifit. I am guessing that you lost some links or the incoming links may have lost some PR. Also more sites may have been added to the SERPs or the algo changed to make your page not as relevent for the query.
