My family was just shocked that I had closed down a successful business. One of my sisters had worked for me. Customers were angry too, until I told them that they could soon get the same information and patterns, for free, online.
Making money by giving things away... Google must be part of my dillusion, and the lady at the bank who cashes my checks, she must be in on it too!

It's a great concept, I teach them how to sew then Google sells them the supplies they need. Simple, logical, not crazy at all...
In response to whether or not my "helpful" family member is computer savvy, not at all. Before they had me committed, they literally came to my home and took my computer away from me, unplugged it and took it! I got put away after getting the police involved. I just wanted my computer back. I was thinking, I'll sleep next week, right now I have Google ads to tweak!
I remember some of my friends telling me that I was "wasting my time" giving away the content on my site for free. I was told that I should charge for it. But I had seen other sites which charged for the same sort of content, (just giving away a *little* bit and trying to sell the rest) and I knew that would not work for me.
So I wrote a totally free site, with ads and affiliate programs supporting it. I am pretty sure I make more money from my site's ads than others do by showing a *little* and trying to sell the rest. It is what has worked best for me.
I don't know how long you've been doing adsense but just be prepared for some months that may flucuate. And make sure to keep some money on the side (of course) -- also depending upon your site topic be carefull around Christmas. My site every year takes a pretty big dive around the holidays, but don't get discouraged it should always bounce back.
Personally I miss the old days when I had the job and the website, both of those checks were very nice and between the two I had over $12,000/month (of course I can't tell ya how much just adsense is ;)) but my revenue has climbed more than it would have if I still had my day job. The extra time I have focused on the website has really paid off... once anyone is making enough money to quit their job they should in my opinion.... you will only better your website with the added time, and in the end profit much more. Mine has grown so much since november that I now have to host it off two Dual XEON servers, haha. Hope your site takes the same path.

I especially applaud the person who convinced their other half to quit their job as well. You can always get another job! Tell them you've been working as a web publisher for Google, it has a nice ring to it.
About taxes, bank account... I'm still using my other business bank account(for the "real" business I had) and when I filed my taxes, on April 14th, the woman at H&R Block told me that it didn't much matter about the bank account, as long as mine is the only name on it. I could use a personal or business account, is what I've been told. I filed as a "web developer". In Florida, US, I don't need any type of business license for this. This is what H&R Block told me. I filed my Google income as a new business, along with the 1099 I got from commission junction. If you are wondering, I ended up paying about $800, after claiming expenses, and that was just for a few months of income. Better set some mullas aside!
but i will never quit my job for adsense. i just find it a little big intriguing to slave for google.
but hey, whatever turns you. if i slave more, i won't be wishing my site's performance to be better.
hey spacey, your adsense history, computer hijacking, police involvement are gonna be highlight of some sort! hahaha, maybe get involved in stand-up comedy.
I've expanded my Internet presence into other areas of arts and crafts over time. And I'm actually teaching and helping real people... that's the part of the "job" that keeps me going. The Adsense program just makes it possible, I will be taking full advantage of this new oppurtunity.
I have a similar situation, and have always given away a fair number of 'samples' that resulted in a large number of inbound links from the beginning & a lot of good will, but I have recently considered giving away all the info--BUT--there are customers who have, over the years, paid me up to a couple hundred dollars for the goods and I'd hate to make them feel cheated.
Any thoughts on that appreciated.
I handled it one customer at a time. I thanked them for their monetary support over the years and let them know, that with their help, I was able to start the Internet business and offer the information for free. I told them how much I appreciated their business and how they helped make my dreams a reality. Just make them feel special, they will eventually forgive you for taking their money!

Of course, I could always go back to chargeing for things on my site, if Adsense had a reversal or something. Nice thing about the web, el quick-o instant changes are possible.
I really like not having the hassle of dealing with customers. When everything is free, you don't get complaints. Just tons of compliments! My head swells every morning when I check my email. Here are a couple I got today:
"I was just shown this by a friend of mine for the first time today. I am really impressed and would like to begin learning how to do this. Thank you for your website."
"I just found you and I love your patterns. Thanks for the inspiration"
"Just discovered your site after searching on Google. Wonderful ideas!"
I get emails like this every day. I encourage people to email their comments or questions and also have several different mailing lists they can sign up for.
I started a new site on April 6th and already have over 200 subscribers for the newsletter, a free pattern of the month club. According to my stats, 21% of visitors are bookmarking the site. That site almost immediately started making $3.00 a day from Adsense, it's up to $5.00 a day now. One of my other, more established, sites makes up to $50.00 a day. I have about 7 different sites going currently and plan to expand!
I'm actually teaching people how to do things, and it's so much fun! Teachers have emailed to say they've used the instructions for class room projects, and my favorite part, people are learning the new techniques then hosting work shops in their area, at senior centers, church groups, one woman hosted a class for her co-workers, using one of my sites as a reference.
Listen, listen, listen to your visitors, that's what I do. Ask them what they want to see and make it easy for them to contact you with their suggestions. Do this, and you'll never be at a loss trying to figure out what to post next.
As you all can see I am brand new here. I would love to walk out of the office in the morning and never go back, but the thing is, I can't afford such a move unless I am kinda 50% sure that I am on the right track.
Is it ok if you guys show me some of your websites and a rough indication on how much money they would generate, if that is in accordance with the webmaster world terms of use of course. If you don't want to tell how much you're earning, that's no problem.

I posted the URL for one of my sites, it's a pretty good one, but not in a very high paying niche. I serve about 1/2 to one million ad views a month, but don't get much for a click.
