my suggestion for this situation is that - just like when you went to office - you anyway go outside twice a day, pretending to be "commuting" from home to office.
This will help you setting your own routine of work-time vs. free-time.
Otherwise, you'll end up never standing up from that PCs. Unless, of course, that's exactly what you want..
cheers
I too have joined the ranks of the self employed(unemployed) and am enjoying it. You get a great feeling of satisfaction from working for yourselfand having control over what you do.
On the down side it is pretty lonely, no office banter except with the guinea pigs. But the forums make up for some of that.
Also you find yourself working a lot harder and longer.
Yey go home working.
You never know when you may need them even when your are not applying for a job, and after a few years they can be a real pain to find.
Also try and employ staff as soon as possible.
Now, i can slow down a little bit because most of my websites are done. I'm just sitting back, relaxing and watching my income rolling.
I can also start looking for another job that i really like besides adsense. I heard some people turned out anti-social because of adsense. They sleep, eat and breath with it.
So far, everything looks great.
is there somekind of established form i need to sign to legally let the government know that i am now self employeed in this way?No, you should be fine. Some people worry about working from home in a residential area... but since you're just doing stuff on the computer it doesn't matter.
In the US it's called a business license. You have to file with the state and then either the city, county, or both. Then you have to deal with the federal government at least 4 times a year.
For example, in my city, if you make less than $1,000/year you don't need a city license, but if you start to or have been making more than $1000/year and they find out, through w9 forms or however, they will simply back-charge you with interest for the time you didn't have a license.
If you think your exempt because your running a home-based internet business your wrong. On the form I filled out they have a checkbox for home-based internet business :)
Also, prepare yourself to be considered as lazy-sleeping-all-day guy and to receive friendly advices like get a real job ;-)
Don't you hate that? People constantly misunderstand - "You're always home and have time," or, "you just work at home so you can take time off." I think their mindset is that, with no boss to fire you, you can do whatever you want. But the thing about working from home is that the work is always here; I know a lot of work-at-home-ers but none of them are lazy.
It was a year ago last Christmas, I told my spouse to quit his job too. He was scared to death. But, I knew we could make it could make work, knew what it would take, and knew the path to achive it. I had brought the income level up to match two full-time incomes. He had faith in me, and told them to take that job and shove it. The business has taken good care of us every since.
You have made a good choice if you dedicate enough time to it, to keep it fresh, new, and keep expanding the business as a whole.
My only advice is this: NEVER take it for granted, and diversify. Eggs in one basket all get crushed at the same time when you accidentally step on them. Know what I mean?
Good luck, and BRAVO! ^5
One thing - Be prepared to be treated one small step above an unemployed person when it comes to getting a loan.
You're kidding right? Perhaps if your credit is lousy you get such treatment. A schedule C is just as good as a paystub to any lender provided you have a 700+ beacon score. I just purchased a $47,000 vehicle, and was never asked once for any verification of income. Pay your bills, claim your income, and you'll never have a problem.

Blanket statements like that don't wash. I've been self employed since August 1999, and my state/county DOES NOT require a business license as my business does not maintain a physical storefront in the state. Each and every state is different.
Remember, diversification is the name of the game.
I think that is what so many are missing the boat on. I mean, it's all well and good that you can take the step and quite your job thanks to your adsense earnings, but what would happen to you next week/month/year if, for whatever reason, you were kicked out of adsense? Entrusting your livelihood to an entitity over which you have ZERO control may indeed by brave, but it also puts too much at risk over which you have no control. Suppose your account is cancelled? Suppose google decides to cut your payout by a major percentage?
I applaud your leap of faith, but I would urge you to spend the next 12-18 months diversifying away from adsense into other income streams.

What state do you live in? I am in Washington State.
I am also wondering where you keep your money. Your bank allows you to conduct business with a personal account?
Bank: where did you get this money?
Customer: huh?
Bank: answer us now we have ways of making you talk!
Seriously though, I've deposited about 22 years worth of payroll checks into personal checking accounts, not once have I ever been asked if I was self employed.
AdSence - keep the right color hat on. And remember you knowledge is most important if don't look like shmo.
It’s very easy to be deceived by the $ sign. Work as hard as you wish, keep it true, with ethics, other wise you’ll loose it all. Remember whose turf you are on – always. Also consider that what you know about a real world now could be absolute in 6 month.
Best of Luck.

Funny how you run away from home to escape abuse, then find it all over again right where you are.

One of the clear advantages of the USA system of diversity, then.

Don't you believe good ol' comsci PhDs are still running the show in the 'plex. All AdSense's been doing all year is squeezing $ to make shareholders happy. And as saying goes "more bucks for them - less bucks for ya".
Listen, learn, and diversify as much as possible. In my two+ years being a full time publisher/affiliate marketer my overall income has gone up significantly, however the value of each basket I hold changes. For example, in the past 1 ½ years my adsense income has gone up pretty close to the range of becoming one of those “UPS Club” members only to loose over 60% of that in two months.
OK, one of the main reasons it lost over 60% was because a significant portion was from a 4 year old and well ranked site that went PR0 (another story). But I also run several different sites with adsense and affiliate programs in different industries. Sometimes one is hot and others are not, then it changes. Overall income keeps going up but the highest/lowest performing revenue generators whether they be niche, site, or program (affiliate or contextual) changes constantly. Although I am still no where near as diversified as I want to be, diversifying everything possible is a no brainier, at least for me.
