August ended with earnings slightly higher than July, although I haven't actually had finalised earnings yet, normally the clawback is extremely minimal, fingers crossed.

I hope September carries on like it has started. Two clicks, CPC 93p and page RPM £7.17 p. Obviously, that will drop but could well be a good start to September.

Earnings were finalised into the mid-first half of three digits with a 0.18% clawback which equates of monetary terms to 25p, not bad at all.

With the turn of the month, the double click penalty returns. Hopefully, it lasts only a week like last time. I truly truly hate Google and wish there was a higher paying CPM network.

I've been a rule-abiding Adsense customer for well over a decade and have never seen a report like August. My Invalid Traffic is over 20% (That's a huge amount of income for a site will 5+ Million Adsense page views a month). How is that possible? I've never seen that in all the years I've been using Adsense. There's normally a little invalid traffic .01-.025% maybe, but this is crazy. I've contacted Adsense and am waiting to hear back from them.

September start is bad. RPM is very low.
Clawback was 1%

Labourday in the US, so this Monday is OFF in the US.

@gatormark - do you have Ad Links?

I've personally found heavy use of ad links leads to greater clawback so I struck a balance with my ad types and placements. But ya, I use to get 10% - 20% type clawbacks regularly when featuring them in high profile spots. It was painful.

@Mentat - No, I never use adlinks. This is an abberration, I hope. Normally I have $60-80 in invalid clicks. This time it was almost $1000!

@gatormark - I had the same problem with huge clawback last year; it turned out that it was due to well-masked clickbombers. Only blocking Amazon AWS IP addresses helped.

August -> RPM was down paired with a traffic hair-cut resulting from the August update = totally sucked! The only positive was my clawback was 2 cents. September is starting out much better, lets hope it sticks.

WOW, I hope it's a reporting error @adsense.
Today figures are very low.

School is in session in many places so my traffic is jumping up as normal...but my Adsense revenue has decreased. More traffic and less money. This year is weird. I've always been able to predict increases for the past 8 years because traffic increases during school meant more money, but this year makes no sense. Not sure how I can have 35,000 more page views than the same day last week (normal increase this time of year) and $15 LESS in money. 13 years with Adsense and never been so confused. I feel like I'm being hacked.

Fewer advertisers, many ad views = lower payment.

I have a lot of Fake Green Download Buttons with virus-like browser extensions.

RPM / CTR has fallen off a cliff today. AdSense seems to be testing new text ad layouts. I see two iterations one with a rounded button "open" and the other rectangular button "open". No arrows and as a result no clicks. RPM is 1/3 of yesterday.

I'm 20% lower on revenue today. Isn't this great?

August exceeded expectations, up 25% versus last year even with fewer impressions, whereas July was much the same. Meanwhile, September is also off to an interesting start, 20% higher RPMs compared to last year, for this first week at least. Onwards and upwards, it seems... for now.

@NickMNS - don't want to scare you, but I've been having these "new" buttons on text ads for a year now. Unfortunately, they are not a new test to your website, but a penalty on a high number of invalid clicks. They will return the arrows in a day or two. maybe even in a week, then if your layout stays the same, they will apply the penalty again and again. My earnings RPM also get lowered a lot and it will never return to what it was.

I don't understand how it's okay for Google to test different ad styles when experiment feature is off. It should be illegal

It's their ballgame. Unless they are doing something specifically forbidden in the terms we all agree to so we can show ads, they can pretty much do what they want. You also probably don't want it to be illegal, because that would mean regulators have gotten involved. They're coming as it is; no reason to rush that day.

I've been seeing the "open" version off and on, here and there for the past couple of weeks. Hasn't seemed to hurt CTR.

Probably true, my numbers are looking better since my post and the "open" and most recently "view" is still being shown in place of the arrows. I find it looks better than the old style, but typically small UI changes can make a big difference. But the data doesn't support it.

@ivok I doubt that these are a penalty. As mentioned above I am still seeing them yet my CTR/RPM is back to "normal". Whatever normal means these days?

Is Terrible the New Normal?

As I have rarely had a problem with AdSense itself, only Google Search I have to ask the obvious question:

How much of the "Is Terrible the New Normal?" is really down to reduction in search traffic - as opposed to traffic is perfectly normal/increasing but ads are rubbish?

For years now, in common with many smaller informational sites, I've been relegated somewhat by Google Search - as traffic drops, so does the quality of your AdSense ads served up - both affecting revenue. Even little trafficked pages may not show any advertisements

That is a Google Search problem, not an AdSense one.

IanCP, it's difficult to know precisely and is your loss of traffic definitely a Google Search problem? Like many others, I used to do well with Adsense just by concentrating on writing content. Traffic has always been up and down, but I've seen a gradual decline since the beginning of 2014. From October 2015 to May 2016, in particular, was a disaster regarding traffic. When I started having success with affiliates at the end of 2014 I removed Adsense for a couple of years. When the affiliate money started to dry up I tried Adsense again, but it was still bad. Very few clicks and very low EPC, with quite a few 0.00 clicks.

Like you, a big problem was loss of traffic. As you say, less traffic equals less clicks, and also ad quality goes down with less traffic. It was getting to the stage a few months ago when frankly it wasn't worth continuing, but I thought I'd at least make a final effort before giving up altogether.

I had never given much thought to SEO previously. We're told content is king, right? So that's what I concentrated on. However, a lot of content that was ranked much higher than my content on Google was lower quality (IMO). I have 15 years experience in my niche and have language skills and other knowledge that many competitor website authors don't have. Sites written by newbies with none of the experience or skills I have were outranking me by a long way. I started reading up and watching videos on SEO - Neil Patel and Brian Dean have put a lot of good stuff on-line. I was quite shocked at what I found. My SEO was virtually non-existent (because I had never given any consideration to SEO) and it was no wonder that Google wasn't ranking my pages. It also became obvious that my competitors were concentrating 90% on SEO and 10% on content. I probably did OK up until five years ago because there wasn't much competition, but the situation is very different these days.

Recently, I have been trying to rectify this problem. No rocket science - just basic white hat SEO techniques that are freely available on-line. I've been doing keyword research, rewriting some content, optimising HTML title tags, HTML H1 tags, etc etc. Also writing some new content.

Nothing happens overnight, but I've been seeing a gradual increase in traffic and yesterday had the most traffic I've had since the end of 2014. I'm continuing with my changes and expect traffic to increase quite a lot more in the coming months. Before it struck me that the loss of traffic might actually be my problem I had blamed Google search, but now it is obvious that I was at fault. When an algorithm, not a person, is evaluating your site your content has to take that into consideration and you need to give the algorithm a few clues.

What about Adsense? Well, despite the increased traffic recently Adsense still isn't good. Yesterday was a great day for traffic, but another dismal day for Adsense. However, I am hoping this is because there is a lag and once Adsense realises that my traffic is increasing it will start to perform better. We shall see. Even if Adsense doesn't start performing I am hoping that the increased traffic will boost affiliate earnings. When my affiliate stuff is going well it makes even 'good' Adsense days look insignificant. It's good not to have all your eggs in the Adsense basket and I also have plans to create some of my own e-content to sell later.

Yes, goes back years ago - there are a huge number of similarly affected folks here.

Once Google provided 70% of traffic, the rest were from links and bookmarks. The only progressive change in the last five years?

Google search! Google no longer likes small informational/educational sites - one reason I find it hard to get Google answers on "How to..."

Is anyone else seeing less text ads these last few days? I am seeing less text ads and when I see them the majority of the time they show open buttons rather than arrows.
