Hello to those of you who I've never met but I consider friends. It's good to be back in the Internet world,

For those reading this, I used to be a "regular" on Webmaster World.

I've spent a year dead, or at least very close to it.

I hope to write some things everyone will find useful as far as preparing for your death.

And I'm writing this on the AdSense board, I am a "former" Publisher who hasn't been paid in a year and has great difficulty contacting someone with AdSense.

It's good to be back.

I hope you take seriously what I write and prepare for what might happen to you any moment now.

I only use open in a new window for links going off my site.

I wonder if there is a big downside to having all links open on your site? Wouldn't visitors end up seeing more ads?

I'll give you the ideas (for funny videos) if I can link to the videos. You can use them for making cash with AdSense or whatever.

It's amazing how much the Internet world has changed in my absent period.

For example, suppose you tell someone to visit your new site, red rocks dotcom that is about red rocks.

If the person uses Google and just enters "red rocks", he/she might just end up at whatever site is ranked highest for "red" and "rocks" and never visit your site.

Now Microsoft has a JV team trying to compete with the big dog "Adsense".

And now I hear Amazon is trying to join the fight.

My how times change.

Put this question in the "Back From The Dead, wow Things have changed" category.

I remember back in the beginning there were some people who complained a lot about getting (PSA) Public Service Ads on their site(s). I don't see those discussed much anymore.

Now, on a site where I still need to make some topical improvements, I see a number of "general" ads for a domain Registrar, a web hosting service, etc.

Is there a term for these ads now? Some kind of replacement for a PSA?

I've been spending time at the Registrar I use.

But now that you mention it, "personal interest" does seem like an appropriate term for what I've been observing in place of "PSA" ads.

Mate I am perennially plagued with them. Unbelievably, I still see College advertisements from Australian institutions for one specific course which I searched rather diligently for over two years ago for a Grand-daughter.

Of course, any eBay searches I've made follow me also like a plague. Having made made the purchase days, weeks, or months ago.

Absolutely pointless. I hope those people aren't paying for impressions.

Hmmm. So is it accurate to say that when someone says they saw an ad about X (speaking of observing an AdSense ad on your site), the person is telling you what they've been viewing on their computer beforehand?

Not necessarily. You can opt out of those "Interest Based Ads" so they may or may not be seeing them. I don't see any more since I found out you can make it stop.

Go to [aboutads.info...] and read before you start. It has good instructions but it needs to be repeated for all browsers and devices.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but I wonder how many people take the time to do that. Some people aren't even aware of important news items even though they just spent hours parked in front of the television.

Oh, I agree with that 100%. I put it here in case you or another Member wanted to make it stop. Yes, why waste 2 or 3 minutes doing something that will end an aggravation people love to complain about?

I had a site that was displaying Adsense ads just fine. Then I noticed AdSense wasn't showing up and realized that I had not published a "Privacy" page on the site.

I took care of that and published a "Privacy" page for the site.

After publishing, I noticed that instantly AdSense was back.

Is that the way things happen these days?

Great that Google noticed the change that fast. And yes, they've required all AdSense publishers to have a privacy policy for the past couple (few?) years. Just one of the many things they do to discourage Made-For-Adsense sites.

Assume everyone was banned from displaying AdSense on more than one site and you had to make it a "desktop" site, a "mobile" site, but not both.

Which would you choose, a "desktop" or "mobile", but not both?

It depends on the niche/subject area of your site, but if I had to choose, I'd choose mobile. It's the way the world is trending now.

However, if you design your site with responsive design, you don't have to choose -- it will display a desktop version for desktop users, and a mobile-optimized version for mobile users.

That explains why I see more people with their face buried into their smartphone instead of watching where they are driving, they are walking, who they are conversing with, etc. :)

Is it just me, or do some others get the idea Google is showing ads based on what I'm thinking other than what I am writing about, what I have searched for, sites I have visited, ... ?

Here's a basic question about using AdSense.

What do you consider is the best font size when writing text on a page? Too small and it may be considered as attracting too much attention to the ads. Too large and it may make for an unwanted and tacky experience.

How's size 16 font?

16px is about the *minimum* size font I use for a page. I don't think about effect on ads, I think effect on eyeballs, particularly my own old eyes. I would probly use 24px if I could get away with it.

Isn't it better to use e.g. 1em or 1.1em. What if someone has a 4xHD mobile?
