June 2013 AdSense Earnings and Observations

Not sure what to think of Adsense at the moment. I have a website with free educational materials such as worksheets and workbooks. I have thousands of resources which are all original and made by myself over the years. Free to download for all. Since a week or two I see that both my visitors numbers and the adsense CTR and CPC are getting lower and lower. June started with the lowest RPM I have ever experienced. What's going on here? Usually all the stats are pretty stable and now suddenly a drop in everything. Any suggestions or comments?

Yesterday was scary strange for me. it was like everything stopped around 10am EST - and I kept thinking adsense was stuck - but today I wake up and it never got better. I find it hard to believe my site never got another single adsense click after 10am EST? I've been with adsense since 2003 and that's NEVER been the case.

It seems fishy or strange at the very least.

@Frost_Angel, my stats "stopped" in a similar fashion as well, but in the evening at the peak of my traffic, and today is D E A D as expected for a Sunday, but Im hooping the lost stats show today.

Well think about user intent. You're attracting a bunch of people who are looking for free stuff, so they're not really optimized to click on ads. They want FREE stuff. I have some sites like that too - I have AdSense on them, but I don't expect too much because I'm not catching them in a buying cycle. The best way to deal with that is 1) work out a way to push them into buy mode, or else 2) get a bunch more traffic. The first is more likely to succeed than the second. Best idea is to do both.

1:30pm - Earnings just blew past all day yesterday, yay. Hopefully there's much more to come because yesterday was a disaster.

June starts better than was the two first days of May, althought it is too earlier to foreseen the tendency.
May at the end was as disaster as April, well 5% better off.

@netmeg Good advice, thank you. You would be surprised with my usual CTR and CPC, even with loads of free stuff! My point is that the sudden drop in traffic and earnings is too big at the moment. My adsense revenue is running at 30% of a normal month. I just wonder why? Also, it seems that the statistics seem stuck all the time! I have periods of hours without any movement. Another strange thing, is the distribution of clicks throughout the day! There is no stability anymore in regard to different geographical and time zones! I have always been able (for 2 years now) to see clear patterns in the adsense stats. Up to recently that is.

4:00am - Just woke up to see yesterday earnings had somehow jumped up, nice! What's more bizarre though is today. Thanks to some superclicks, I'm already within pennies of all day yesterday. Beats me what they're doing at the Plex, but so far today looks very good.

7:00am - Wow! Just blew past yesterday with only a handful of superclicks so far. Already the second highest earnings day in months and there's still fifteen hours left to go. Yay.

I have always been able (for 2 years now) to see clear patterns in the adsense stats. Up to recently that is.

It's a different world. I think Google is doing their click validation differently (more real time, less end-of-month) and I for one have never believed that all clicks get validated in the same length of time - I'm pretty sure some get flagged for a more thorough review before they're counted.

It's also very heavily tied to AdWords and what's going on there, and there have been some HUGE changes in AdWords recently.

Plus, I know I keep harping on it, but mobile mobile mobile. I'm seeing very different patterns this year as opposed to last year when it comes to mobile. And that's another thing for you to look at too - are you getting more mobile traffic, are ads appearing for that mobile traffic, are your sites rendering for smartphones and 7" tablets and 10" tablets, etc etc.

I think it's pretty much too complicated a system now to rely on any previous patterns we may have thought we've seen.

Oddly enough, not much has moved in the past five hours. Even still, if the earnings hold where they are, today will be one of the best in many many months. Most AdSense excitement I've had in a long time, that's for sure!

Earnings just moved up again another 30%. Is AdSense trying to pay me back for all the crappy months in one day? Wow. Hope it lasts!

3:30am - Yesterday earnings peaked around 7:00pm and didn't budge after that. It was still high enough to be the best day in nearly two years, which was both exhilarating and perplexing to see. It'll be interesting to watch what happens today. Will yesterday wind up as some anomaly or new earnings level? Obviously, I'm hoping it's the latter, but realistically I'll be very surprised to see it. Fingers crossed!

The last three days of May picked up, then June 1 was OK, then the floor dropped out. Three days of "bad eggs".

This is intriguing. For those of us who aren't in the know on the changes in AdWords, can you elaborate?

I'm seeing this in a big way too. I checked May 2012's traffic breakdown and the numbers were 26% mobile, 74% desktop. For May 2013, mobile had jumped up to 43%, and often rises above 50% on the weekends.

Which affects how advertisers will be bidding. But if you want to keep up with AdSense, you should periodically browse through the AdWords blog on general principle.

9:00pm - Been dead all day. Numbers are complete opposite of yesterday. Lowest click count, CTR, CPC, RPM and earnings all month. Anybody else? WTF is going on?
