Just got a message from Google that third party ads are now available. And if you've enabled image ads, then you are opted to third party ads as well.

Anyone knows who these third parties are?

dazzlindonna has this right. Updating our privacy pages with every time Google adds, or drops, another ad source is nonsense.

We could always just scrape the list of third parties from Googles page, but Google is not that great at keeping their own info pages up to date, even though they demand we keep ours up to date.

This whole Privacy page issue is just a play on Googles part to try and push any liability issues off their shoulders and onto ours.

Or we could link to the list, and let Google update it for us.

That's what I'm suggesting as an alternative to the rule Google currently has for us, but until Google agrees to allowing us to do that, that's not an option.

That may well be what some do, I might even try that.

BUT........ keep in mind that Google might not keep their own list/page up to date.

Then what?

It would be possible for Google to have a piece of code for us to include on our privacy pages that shows the list of advertisers (with a link to their site).

Adsense publishers would just have to copy/paste the code into their privacy page and not worry about updating it as it would be Google who make the changes.

insert code from Google that would put a group of links on our pages? wherever would they come up with that sort of technology.

I really wish AdsenseAdvisor would chime in on this one.

>>I really wish AdsenseAdvisor would chime in on this one.

I suspect ASA is either busy with the holiday weekend or they're working behind the scenes to make this a bit easier on us.

Let's face it, Google goes to great lengths to make sure they're optimizing their income stream. That means more money for publishers too. We recognize that fact.

The problematic theme we've been seeing is that Google has been asking us to update our sites too to remain in compliance with new TOS. Well, those of us that want to comply need help:

- Where is the list of advertisers?
- How frequently with that list change?
- Will we be notified when the list changes?
- Do we need to link to specific pages on those advertiser websites (such as their privacy statements).

As mentioned by others, it's easier for Google (one entity) to maintain a list then it is for thousands (millions?) of websites and website owners.

markus007, are you saying that these 3rd party ads are only for placement-targeted advertising? Because the ad review center only shows for placement targeted ads (of which I have none). Therefore, my ad review center is empty.

Right, joelgreen, that is the "current" list. How often will it change...how often will we have to update our lists based on its changes?

It would be nice if they had a more "site visitor" friendly list that we could simply link to. I think that the majority of my visitors would say "huh?" to that page provided they even bothered to view my privacy policy.

Thanks for your feedback on this development, and on how we can improve the Ad Review Center. I will communicate all your feedback to the relevant teams.

According to the privacy policy requirements, publishers must notify their users of the use of cookies and/or web beacons to collect data in the ad serving process. While I can't further discuss this change, I will pass your comments to our legal team.

farmboy is right; if you display only text ads on your sites, then third-party ads will not appear.

Regarding the Help Center entry ken_b mentions, we're sorry, but this Help Center entry was not complete in its
explanation. You can only set a minimum CPM if you are using our Google Ad Manager ad server to deliver AdSense ads. You can set other remnant ad inventory to a certain CPM and have AdSense try to compete against it to create a virtual minimum CPM. This entry will be updated shortly to make this clear.

AdsenseAdvisor, we already know about the requirement to notify users about the use of cookies and/or web beacons. That happened LAST TIME when we were told to have privacy policies. THIS TIME is different. THIS TIME we are now told we have to link to the 3rd party advertisers and that the list of those parties can change at any time. So we potentially have to update our privacy policies all the time. Imagine how disruptive it would be if Google added or deleted 3rd party advertisers on a daily basis. Imagine how often we would have to change our privacy policies because Google's list of advertisers were constantly changing? This isn't some static text about cookies we're talking about. This is a changing list of advertisers that currently requires us to keep track of this changing list and change our sites every time the list changes.

ASA

Targeted ads have been good to me, but I believe the time has come to completely opt out of placement targeted ads.

I don't mean just setting my prefs to "text only" because that still allows placement targeted text ads to run on a site.

I want to opt out of ALL placement targeted ads.

Do I just email adsense-support@google.com (is that the right adsense support email address?)and request that change, or what/

ASA

False hopes.

You cannot set minimum CPM in Ad Manager for AdSense. AdSense can compete for the slot but there isnt any option to set minimum CPM for AdSense.

From my testing over the last few weeks, AdSense will be only served if I dont have any campaigns running. Even my default campaign is always used even if set to 0.01 CPM.

When I turn off my default campaign AdSense will take over. Too bad half of the AdSense banners are spam and not related to the topic. Also earning from these banners are still just pennies per CPM therefore I do not recommend using AdSense image adSense to anyone.

That's the right address, but you may want to word it as a suggestion and indicate your reasons.

Yeah I'm not sure the person who wrote that email was fully aware of what it implies. That's completly, utterly insane.

To clarify; with Google Ad Manager, a publisher can set CPMs for the alternative ads he wants to show, and AdSense ads will display only when we can beat the CPMs offered by the alternatives, or if no other competitors are competing for this slot. You can find information on this on the Google Ad Manager Help Center here [google.com].

Since Google doesn't seem to want to help us deal with the list of advertisers, some of us have taken it upon ourselves to make this process less onerous. Can't drop urls but a search for smackdown adsense privacy widget will likely get you to the right place. Or if that gets moderated out, just pm me.

I hate that WebmasterWorld moderates useful info and URL's. A little controlling IMO.

Anyway, all that downsides aside, has anybody allowed 3rd party ads and noticed an increase/decrease in revenue?

Why does no other ad agency require this?

I have used Valueclick, Tribal Fusion, Burst Media, Advertising.com, Adpepper, Gorilla Nation, Glam Media, Casale Media, Eyeconomy, Adsdaq,etc...

None have ever asked me to maintain some list.

Also give us more info on the ad review center. I usually have over 100 ads for review, but no way to sort them or identify what ones migth be worth running. Are they CPM/CPC what is the CPM? At the moment I just keep images disabled yet still get loads of them into ad review center.
