You still can add all your channels just as before. That's good and a relief to me.
You can now give the ad unit a name. Add a date if you wish. Or whatever. It can be saved which is good I suppose, but I don't see the point. It's not something I need.
The new interface is a PITA! I want it all on one page and do not like having to switch pages just to get the code. It's not real clear about how to get back to the first page so one can make a new ad unit with the only change being a different combination of channels. That's a real bad move IMHO.
There's a preview page, but that irritated me highly due to the subject matter displayed in the sample ad that was shown. I found that ad disgusting and extremely objectionable.
I swear, between lack of communication, the channel fiasco of last week, falling ad rates, and now the fact that I can no longer edit my ad code via DreamWeaver, I'm out. For better or worse, I am permanently done with AdSense, and switching back to Yahoo for good.
Good riddance!
The old codes will still work, but they won't have the new functionality.
Here's the verbatim quote from the AS site, Code Implementation Guide:
"In order to display Google ads on your website, it is very important that you copy the ad code exactly as it appears on the AdSense Setup tab of your account and paste it directly into the HTML source code of your webpages, without any modifications. Modifying the ad code is against our program policies and may also result in errors on your page."
The last sentance is pretty clear, I believe.
AdSenseAdvisor, why did you guys decide to make these new changes mandatory? I'm not 16 years old running a 4 page blog about my pet rabbit, I have a 60,000 page commercial website, and your new code changes have just derailed by entire ad integration and editing system. Not having access to color or channel code is asinine. Every rudimentary website editor allows you to quickly swap out colors within an AdSense ad unit without any trouble whatsoever, why would force people to be logged in to AdSense to make these changes?
These new changes make zero sense. Forcing someone to log into AdSense to make basic color changes to the code is an odd move to say the very least. Are you guys now recording color information from ad units, and hence this pointless change of system? If so, be honest and just come out and say you did it because it gives you guys colors to match with conversion data.
What would be nice to see at some point in the future is an auto-optimisation feature (for colours etc...). It wouldn't surprise me if this sort of thing is in the pipeline.

Fundementally, Google is about to face down the Ad Presentation Optimizers, and wants to offer you the option to let them change all the colors, etc. according to their own optimizations based on traffic, time of day, nation of origin, and visitor history. Maybe a visitor from China is more likely to click your ad if it's red. They'll find that out over time, and optimize your ad presentations in China to the preference of the end-users.
Before they can do that, they need to stop allowing you to embed that stuff into the code. It has to be virualized.
I'm going to let them do the optimizations when they offer it (that's my speculation.) I look forward to it.
paste it directly into the HTML source code of your webpages, without any modifications.
I submit that there is *no* room for interpretation, no matter how minor you deem the change to be, and whether you deem colors to part of the code. You might choose to ignore it, but that does not make it any less a violation of the TOS.
So, the best thing to do is shoot the messenger. Buddy.
Give them a few months to work out the bugs/features... Google wants to keep everyone happy and I'm sure they will accommodate as quickly as they can...
They are best game in town and they have treated us all very well over the years... I'm sure they would appreciate a little patience.
Lets not get all anal over color changes, I have never had any problems with google over it and they have checked my site for optimisations.
I have my adsense code in notepad files, and just cut and paste it into the suitable area. I think I will continue to do that until I see a reason to change to a new system.
Rule of thumb with new things on the net , never be first and never be last :)
I'm out. For better or worse, I am permanently done with AdSense, and switching back to Yahoo for good.
BlueLeaf. I hear you - I am also moving over to Yahoo for better or for worse. I've been in with Adsense since about the beginning, all I've seen is declining revenue and declining levels of customer service across the board. Tired.
Changing FFFFFF to 000000 in the AdSense code isn't against the terms of use. You head to the control panel to make those changes eh? LOL
Where can we check this new ad code implementation?
There is a whole thread about Google's poor communication, and this is another example. No published schedule, the change just happens. And when I try to find out more I'm redirected to blogger. Hardly professional.
The problem that I will face is I set a variety of channels based on where the user came from, when, how, etc. Without me being able to change the channel combinations on my side I'd have to generate THOUSANDS of possibilities to manage all the possible combinations of channels that I might use. I use the channel data to manage when, where, and how I advertise my site.
I don't think google overlooked that.
One possible reason they would do that is to protect your AdSense ID.
Who knows, maybe they will throw us a bone and say we can set the old variables to set the channels on an ad.
