Facing with big changes. Something is happening again? I'm pretty tired of Google updates for the last few months... Niche: IT how-to's, technology...

Google apparently mistakenly thought that their site was hacked and hence removed from index.

See here: [searchengineland.com...]

And what was it about the site that caused Google to think its hacked? Not sure i want to know to be honest.

@Shepherd - my first thought too. Those without contacts or influence would be left for dead I fear.

SEMRush Sensor tool seeing some major turbulence (9.3/10) across US mobile and desktop as well.

I guess a Google update is brewing up right now. Any confirmation?

It's potentially a major update but is being overshadowed by SearchEngineLand being deindexed. Tons of movement in our industry and we specially got absolutely annihilated (again). We're used to it by now, literally nothing we do seems to ever help. October 2016 was still the last update that helped us in any significant way, everything since then has been a slow burn down.

So ever since Penguin 4.0 was released?

I'm not sure, possibly. Our downfall started with the "Fred" update in Feb 2017 and has been ongoing since then.

I experienced an initial increase in traffic after Penguin 4.0 was released, then I started dropping in early 2017, either Jan or Feb, it’s hard to tell as that’s a low traffic point for me anyway. I went on a long slow decline all through 2017 and didn’t notice because I was getting so much organic traffic from social sharing. I suspect it was “Fred” but I have no idea what “Fred” actually was, because it doesn’t seem to be what everyone claimed it was. I wasn’t perfect but I’ve never been as ad heavy or keyword manipulative as the site at the top of my niche is. Jan or Feb 2017 is when Marie Haynes says they introduced additional trust signals into Penguin (though she never calls it Penguin, just refers to link based updates).

Don't fall for one of the best marketing schemes we've seen a while. SEL has someone on the inside of Google search team and had them deindex their site to drum up exposure. The end.
