Weather is a snapshot of what you see outside on any one single day. Google's serps are a good example of today's SEO weather. The overall weather pattern is the climate. If you are building a home and the the weather is sunny today, you would still build a roof for your home because you know your climate will eventually have some daily weather containing rain.

When making SEO decisions be smart and don't overreact to Google's SEO weather aka the daily serps. You want to strategically respond to the SEO climate aka quality content, traffic generating backlinks, proper usability, etc. for the best chance of long term success. Listen to what Google is saying & not saying. Often when Google warns not to do something, it is often because an exploit is manipulating the serps and Google is trying to scare aware more people from adding to the exploit. I am not suggesting you chase after exploits though they can be quite profitable. I am suggesting you seek the deeper meanings of Google statements to better understand the SEO climate.

If you build for today's SEO weather, you will likely fail because by the time you are finished the weather has changed. Chasing after the latest updates is not usually the best idea. You generally want to take a more holistic approach and build the best site for the overall climate so you can get ahead and stay ahead of the updates. Reacting to the last weather report will more likely put your site in last place.

The way I look at this is that it's going to rain every day. The rain is heavier than yesterday, and yesterday was slightly less than today. It's going to rain harder and harder as time moves forward. If I wait for a sunny day, I'll be old and gray and nothing to show with my time and life. The place is going to flood and the house I built will sink because there is water everywhere. This is the story of the web. Figure it out.

goodroi -- I agree with everything you said.

I would like to add that you need to plan a site very carefully before you launch it. This includes its structure and navigation, article topics, etc. If you start with a good plan, then you shouldn't need to make any major revisions later.

People that rush to get a site up without doing much planning are less likely to be successful.

What a great way of looking at it.

Yes, the SEO climate means that the extension planned is now put off, and i'm building a another floor, instead.

Translation ---> Think Long term...

Thinking short term still matters. Maybe a different analogy. If you eat nothing but Doritos, your long-term outlook is not good. But if all you have is Doritos and you're going to starve to death before you get anything else, eat the Doritos, because starving to death is not a long-term strategy either.

Think long term PLUS eat your Doritos today, because while starving to death is not a long-term strategy, give yourself a shot at a better future too.

Exploit the short term with actions & reactions smart for the times, generate income & capital here and now, to fuel your long term ventures. Complementary policies, not mutually exclusive.

Build, build, build - test, test, test.

The SEO weather is always sunny. So long as you have proper weather control tools. Thinking about the customer's needs and about the customer's ways of thinking about what you want to offer him will bring you to the realization how to fine-tune your weather control machine. Sometimes the realization is that your customer is not really online the way you think they are and you can't actively monetize from your website. Rather tune your weather machine to position your business as an information or even business-card type of property. Sometimes you will realize that the weather is always cloudy with a chance of rain and there are too many raindrops in the SERPS, just like you.

Think outside of the SERPS if you want to rank well on them.
