netmeg -- we don't know for sure how big of a role user metrics plays in Google's algorithm.

No, we don't, but I do know my own experiences and so far in my experience, sites that are really really loved by users who come back to them over and over again tend to rank pretty well and stay ranked. Pinterest is one of those sites.

SERPS in my vertical are incredibly bad, back to domain crowding for the big name sites who hardly need search engine exposure to be found. At what point will they finally move Amazon and eBay to the "shopping" tab or Pinterest to the "Images" tab? Some sites are so big, like Houzz, that they are their own search engines for their vertical, why do the need six consecutive places in Google? There is nothing tricky going on as RC mentioned, it's not trickery, it's just plain favoritism for a select few that pull in tons of traffic to adsense filled pages, Quality and uniqueness is not a metric that Google seems to hold in very high regard.

@samwest, yes, it looks for most queries:

3x amazon
3x ebay
3x same brand

order may differ.
All 9 organic slots are occupied. You are allowed to buy ads.

@samwest

yes I agree.
I was around when they said that PPC could only have one domain in their results for "quality purposes".

Yet for natural results, it is common for the top 10 results to spread over 3 domains.

why not indent the results for the same domain.

This is a user issue, give the searchers a bigger choice, so they can get better Click though rate information.

Lets have 10 unique domains per result on the first page, or indent the sub-results.

And just so happen to be their next door neighbour.

Quality and uniqueness is not a metric that Google seems to hold in very high regard.

Especially so when houzz results are listed, they are, in general, diabolically incorrect.

@Robert Charlton - Perhaps you are correct. I did advise the website owners pretty much the same thing, telling them that as long as Google liked them that much, whatever the reason, they should give it a rest and come back, changing anything more significant on the website itself after a few months. I have seen a few odd choices made by Google in my vertical as well though. A website with absolutely no backlinks (or any I can find at least) and blatantly spammy content ( text content is 3-4 generic sentences followed up with Product Category : <insert 40 keywords>) is shooting up to not only first page of Google but in some cases above authority websites, in this case the venue (keyword is venue name+year). I have seen these spammy websites appearing around Panda updates but not with such magnitude.

Guess we'll find out sooner or later, this websites fate.
