Hello, recently one of my ecommerce website is totally affected due to penalty. im sure there is no message in WMT. but my traffic is suddenly dropped from 3k to 200. i dont know why it was happened but referring some articles i got a point that duplicate descriptions and duplicate meta titles in WMT are also the main reason of manual penalty and sudden dropping ? s tht true ? i doubt and i check my site in removem tool. it notified that due to over optimization of some anchor text your site is in penalty. so which one is true ? will u pls clear my doubt ?

Not enough information to diagnose your problem - when did it drop? Does it coincide with one of the Google changes, like Panda 4?

Hello aravfshadow144 and welcome to WebmasterWorld!

Netmeg is right, unfortunately there is no enough information in your post. In order for members to help you diagnose the problem, I am wondering if you could answer the following questions:

- when did your traffic drop (which date)
- The percentage of the drop
- was the traffic drop a slow slide losing the traffic over a period of time or an immediate drop to the lower traffic level?
- Have you checked your WMT Search Queries section, where I presume you could see the drop in impressions. Have you done any analysis of that data (which countries, was it long tail lost or big traffic keywords, etc)
- have you done any significant changes to your website prior to drop and if so, what did you change
- anything else that would help members help you diagnose your problem

referring some articles i got a point that duplicate descriptions and duplicate meta titles in WMT are also the main reason of manual penalty and sudden dropping ?

Duplicate titles and meta descriptions are not the reason of manual penalty, but they may signify a duplicate content issues with your site. However, unless you did some changes to your website before your drop, which introduced duplicate titles and descriptions, then I doubt this is the reason for traffic loss.

In other words, if you had duplicate titles/descriptions problem for some time before the traffic drop, they would not be the reason for your drop.

But if you changed something with your site recently, which resulted in duplicate titles and descriptions and then you saw the drop, then you probably have some techincal issue where duplicate titles and descriptions are just manifestation of the same problem and whilst they are not the reason for your drop, they may point to an issue with the site.

I suggest that you try to answer questions I listed above so that we get more information first.

In my opinion, this is VERY UNLIKELY to cause a problem or a penalty.

Hello sorry guys due to work i cant reply soon.

Thanks for ur reply,

The traffic was lost slowly June 9th the traffic is 3,400 and june 10th it will be 1,300 and in the june 17th it was 214 still now only 200 is daily visitors. Upto 90% totally dropped.

Yes i checked the WMT about penalty messages but simply theres no msg. only 357 duplicate descriptions and 380 duplicate titles errors. and in WMT also the impressions dropped from 20,000 to 1300 at june17th. and i checked the keywords also there is no keywords in google SERP before all keywords in page 2 and page 3. i don't do anything just doing seo only.

You should firstly check your logs to verify that Google has not got any issues crawling your site. You should also check that you have not put noindex by mistake, in other words, firstly make sure it is not some techincal issue your side.

You are saying about having duplicate descriptions and duplicate titles reported, have you had these before 9th of June or is this something that appeared just after the end of June?

When you go to duplicate titles section and you click on one of titles, you will see URLs of pages that have duplicate title. You can click on URL to see the page on your site. Are these the pages with the same content or are these two different pages with the same title? Do you recognise URLs, i.e. which version of URL are you using to link to the page on your site? Would you recognise where the other version(s) of URL come from? I.e. do you have some techincal issue or is it someone perhaps linking to you using spurious parameters and creating a duplicate content in this way.

Do you use canonical link element? If your duplicate titles are from pages with different URLs but the same content, it would be worthwhile perhaps implementing canonical link element.

You could also check your site with MajesticSEO or Ahrefs and check whether you have inbound links spike in the last couple of months, and if so, are these ones you perhaps built or not.

i don't do anything just doing seo only

What exactly did you do by "doing seo only"?

How old is the site?

How Many DIFFERENT Products do you sell on that site?

How many pages are on that site?

How many pages does google have indexed?

Do your pages all have a canonical tag on them?

Is google indexing the same page several times with slightly different URLs?

There is some technical issues make duplicate issues. and the site has lakhs of pages. among those 40,000 k indexed now. on there some 600 issues of duplicate descriptions. asusual i done bookmarks, social media sharing, link connection, web 2.0, blogs etc.

i checked now in the free tool *Google Backlink Checker Tool for Penguin & Disavow Analysis - it shows 136 dead links on there. Host Error, 302 Redirected Links, Not found, No Response Links. Now which links i should submit in disavow tool ?

I am sorry but I am completely confused by your response. I apologize in advance if I misunderstand your questions.

"There is some technical issues make duplicate issues."

Then you need to clean up those technical issues so that you don't have duplicate pages.

Look into proper usage of the canonical tag.

"asusual i done bookmarks, social media sharing, link connection, web 2.0, blogs etc."

It appears that now you are talking about a completely different subject (link building) instead of duplicate title tags.

If you have done ANY link building, now would be a good time to disavow ALL of those links.

I hope this helps.

40k pages? What is on those pages?

Off first glance, this sounds like it could be Panda related. <snip> Did the traffic/impression drop just happen or did this occur at the end of last month -- say around May 20th.

Coupon site with 40k pages. Yes, I'd say that is ripe for Panda.

RetailMeNot got hit on the last wave of Panda 4.0, losing approximately 35% of their traffic. They're a huge brand funded by Google Ventures so if they aren't safe no one in this space is. I'd take a hard look at your pages and see how much content they actually have.
