Canonical link element on dynamic pages?

Hi,

I'm working on a rather large ecommerce website where all of the category pages are dynamically generated. Many of those category pages have canonical link elements pointing to themselves. The pages are all unique - every time a user clicks on a new category/subcategory the URL changes entirely and the page populates with the relevant products.

Is it a problem from an SEO standpoint to have canonicals on those pages?

It is not a problem to have a canonical link element pointing to own URL. The important is that if two or more pages have a different URL, but the same content, you pick one as a main page and have a canonical on all pages that point to that main page.

The pages are all unique - every time a user clicks on a new category/subcategory the URL changes entirely and the page populates with the relevant products.

This is fine. I presume in this case the canonical link element also changes?
