Domain lost rankings after transfer

I moved a site to a new domain last May (2013). The previous domain had good rankings for industry related terms and accounted for a large percentage of traffic. I followed all of the steps recommended by Google here: [support.google.com ]

From May until January 16th of this past year Google left the old domain in their results even though it was redirecting everything over to the new domain. For branded terms both sites would appear in results.

Then on January 16th the old domain was removed from the rankings. The problem is that the old domain was still ranking for a lot of non-branded terms whereas the new domain was only ranking for branded terms.

Any ideas on what I can be doing to try to recover this? Really appreciate the help!

I have moved many sites using 301 redirects and have not had a problem.

Did you double check your redirects using a header checker to make sure it is working properly? A single typo can ruin it.

Thanks goodroi. I did.

<snip>

No errors in Google Webmaster tools either.

Any idea why Google would have left it in their index for so long after it was redirecting?

There were some reports in the last few months about Google not always following redirects.

Could you please do the following:

- Go to Google Webmaster Tools account and execute "Fetch as Googlebot" of the home page and also of one internal pages

- Copy the response headers from each Fetch

- replace the domain name in headers with "example.com" and post the result here

Thank you firefighter119, yes this is what I am looking for.

Could you confirm that the Fetch was done for the OLD domain? Because what I am seeing here is 200 OK and not 301 Moved Permanently.

If the fetch was not for the URLs from the OLD domain, could you repeat this with old domain URL (I presume you do have old domain in Google Webmaster Tools).

My apologies. I used the new URL.

I did a search on the OLD domain name and it appears to still be displaying in Google results - although not for any of the non-branded keywords it was ranking for in the past. It only appears for searches on its exact domain URL.

Not sure if that makes sense (or helps). Thanks everyone!

Your HTTP headers look fine. If it was like this since you moved domains (i.e. it was 301 all this time), I have no idea why Google would not follow 301 redirect and remove the old site from the index.

Here are some thoughts:

Previously (before 16th of January), has ANY of your old pages disappeared from the index and the new page ranked instead?

With regards to site move, seeing different server technologies, was it the straight domain move or has the site been redeveloped as well? If it has been redeveloped, do you have pages mapping 1:1 or is the new site smaller than old one or vice versa? What I am getting at - as you are not ranking for your non-branded terms, is it possible that the pages that used to rank for these on the old site do not exist any more on the new site?

Also, I have seen sites where on occasion the 301 redirect stops working and 200 OK is intermittently being returned. This may cause Google not to follow the redirect. Have you been checking your IIS logs during the period when the old site was still in index to see what response codes are returned? If so, were they consistently 301?

When the site transferred domains it was related to a redesign. We did make sure that each page that could go 1:1 did before the site even launched. The site did grow in size over the previous domain so new pages were added. However, any old pages were redirected to their counter-part.

The text on the pages did not change dramatically. Imagery and layout did.

I will look over the logs and see what I can find. Really appreciate the help.

I'm just at a loss here.

1:1?

How many redirects are we talking about? How large is your htaccess file? Did you use dynamic wildcard matching?

@ firefighter119

To add on to goodroi's question above, how exactly are you doing the redirects? In an htaccess file? Or on each page with a php header redirect, for example?

I ask because I had a typo in a couple of pages when I used the php headers redirect, and although it looked fine in fetch as googlebot, it was NOT redirecting traffic properly AND it was losing visitors / rankings.

In fact, I didn't even notice it had an error until I tried accessing the old page in Internet Explorer 7 and the 301 redirect didn't send me to the new page. It just gave me a 404 error.

Really, i would not have known because the redirect worked fine in chrome, opera and firefox, and even in IE8. It wasn't until I tried it in IE7 that I realized something was wrong. I double checked and I had a small code error in my php redirect.

Again, the baffling thing was that in fetch as googlebot, it gave me the correct headers. But it had fallen out of the google SERPs.

Once I fixed it, it took about a week for traffic and rankings to return to the new page.

Hope this helps.

Thanks goodroi and Planet13

I took a look at the .htaccess. The site is a Wordpress site and I have been using a plugin called "Redirection" to handle the 301s.

(There is also a plugin called WP-Better Security that is being used and has added to the .htaccess.)

Here is what it looks like:

# 1 WEEK
<FilesMatch "\.(jpg|jpeg|png|gif|swf|mpeg|mp4|mp3|xml|css|js)$">
Header set Cache-Control "max-age=604800, public"
</FilesMatch>

# 1 MIN
<FilesMatch "\.(html|htm|php)$">
Header set Cache-Control "max-age=60, private, proxy-revalidate"
</FilesMatch>

<IfModule mod_headers.c>
<FilesMatch "\.(js|css|xml|gz)$">
Header append Vary: Accept-Encoding
</FilesMatch>
</IfModule>

<FilesMatch "\.(?i:mp3)$">
ForceType application/octet-stream

From what I can see from the above, your redirects are handled by php and not by .htacces as from the above we can see that pretty much all requests are passed to wordpress.

This aligns with what you said above on using Redirection plugin for redirects.

Would it be better to have these written directly to the .htaccess?

Less overhead if you put them in .htaccess. Plus that redirection plugin made a mess of one of my sites once; never fully trusted it after that.
