Should I deindex low quality content pages (~30.000) from Google?

Dear Forum Members,

I am the webmaster of a PR4 website and have noticed that the rankings have dropped within the last 12 months despite the fact, that I could draw more and more backlinks and social media fans.

I assume that this is due to the fact that my site has grown to over 35.000 indexed pages and thus the link juice is spread over so many internal pages that is just got too thin for my main landing pages (about 100) to rank well.

Most of the pages are just small nodes that I dont need to be indexed by Google as the content appears on consolidated views and panels, too. This might cause a duplicate content isssue as well.

So, I would like to get most of the small content nodes deindexed from Google.

The questions are:

- Should I only deindex these pages or should I also add rel="nofollow" to all the links pointing to these pages?

- How is the flow of the link juice affected by deindexing most of the pages? Will it then only be distributed among the pages that remain in the index?

- Should I implement a proper Silo structure to my website?

Thanks a lot for your time and I am looking forward to your feedback.

Stay tuned!

After reading your question I am worried you might be trying to manipulate Google more than you are trying to market your website. Google is getting better every day at spotting manipulation and ignoring or penalizing it.

Pagerank sculpting and other link schemes are not a good investment of time. Improving the site navigation and value of each page to better satisfy users so they come back & bring their friends is a better way to invest your time.

In general I do not like using nofollow or deindexing. I prefer to delete hopeless cases and to completely rebuild the ones I judge to have a chance of being redeemed.
