Mobile Annotations in Newssitemap?

I have two sites one mobile and one desktop version. The mobile version was set to "noindex" The desktop version has all the annotations which are required to redirect the smartphone user to the mobile version.

Now my question: Should I put mobile annotations like "rel alternate" also in my newssitemap? I know that it is recommended for normal sitemaps but what about newssitemaps?

Just curious but why not use responsive design and avoid having to noindex your duplicate mobile site.

I would guess that the mobile site is getting more or less about half of your traffic. If you believe Google is using (or going to use in the future) usage signals in their algorithm then why would you want to split it up between two different sites which also increases your workload. Not to mention having duplicate sites splits up your link equity which is not fun.

we are working on a responsive version but for now we have 2 sites which is also ok with Google as long as the mobile version is on noindex and the desktop version has the right annotations.
