Google has never made meta description a searchable part of a document in their search.

Have you checked if the meta description for which competitors are appearing is also part of the visible text on the page? This could be the reason.

visible text

Where "visible" = within the "body" element, not necessarily visible to the naked eye.

I've experimented with meta text searches myself. It isn't indexed, but it can be displayed in search results. This can be confusing.

Yep - thanks for clarifying what I meant!
