My 10+ year old site has slowly tanked over the past 18 months - 2 years in Google, slipping slowly but surely for all keywords.

Over this period, we made a number of improvements to the site and rank really well on Bing (page 1 - top 5 for everything).

My question is; is Google broken? Or is Bing just not as good / extensive as Google meaning it's easier for us to rank well?

I had a strange thing happen to me Tuesday. For 2 hours Bing traffic went wild. I don't know if they were doing an algo update or not but all of a sudden my site had more traffic than it ever did pre penguin and panda from Google. That experience has led me to start changing my SEO to be Bing and Yahoo friendly and forget about trying to please Googstapo.
Since the 2 hour spurt from Bing and Yahoo I have had about 100 more referrals per day from them than before.

Someone who worked at the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium), linked to our website in one of his "useful links" pages. Google sent me that URL as a sample "unnatural" link when we tried to get our penalty lifted. It now seems they consider people who work at W3, spammers.

Good grief, how depressing to read that. Sod Google, rebuild & prosper!
