A lot of these mentioned are likely to be considered self-placed links, and, if they're dofollow, they will carry either zero SEO value or negative value.

Current thinking is Google would like self-links (eg, links back to the mother site in guest blogs) to be nofollowed. The idea is that these will bring traffic to your site while not manipulating PageRank, and any links stemming from the traffic would be editorial links, freely given, and thus deemed trustworthy.
