Potential for search traffic from google maps

I just noticed in google maps there is a facility called 'create map' (under 'My Places') where you can specify a kml file for example, that will be used to generate a map. The place markers on the map can include links to individual pages on our own website.

I also noticed it is possible to 'share' the map publicly, and google say that it will then 'be published in search results and user profiles'.

I've never seen this kind of map appear in search results, perhaps but meanwhile I wonder if it could be:
(1) a valuable possible source of extra search traffic, or
(2) just a way for google to assimilate my data into their own results or knowledge graph, because I need to tick a box saying the file and data is 'public'

Any thoughts or experience of this very welcome

Hello

Yes I have seen this in SERPS....albeit fairly localised ones.
travel and accommodation sector in the uk.
We have created these maps but mainly for visitors and to show that we go that little bit further than the competition
.found them quite time intensive but the ability to embed images and links is good.

Would love to read other feedback on this.
