Keyword tool vs. Keyword planner - data discordance ?

Hello everyone, great board and excellent discussions you have. This is my first post and question about new google service.

I was prepping SEO strategy for a new website using google keyword tool. Important data for me was monthly volume of searches for my keywords.

Then when I started AdWords campaign, google suggested me to use Keywoord Planner tool. Ok, but strange thing happened.

Keyword planner is showing ~10 times less monthly searches then the keywoord tool, for the same keywords and the same country and language ?!?!

How come ?
One of the tools is lying, and I'm in a problem because I created strategy using keyword tool data, now I'm not sure is it right.

I would understand that there's a some small difference, but 10x difference between two gogole keyword tools is crazy.

You have probably compared Broad match on Keyword Tool External with results in Keyword Planner tool - this would account for a huge differences you are seeing. Keyword Planner tool shows numbers for the "Exact match" type (bold emphasis mine):

Average monthly searches ("Avg. monthly searches"): The average number of times people have searched for the exact keyword...

If you compare Keyword Tool External using Match Type = [Exact] with the results in Keyword Planner tool, then the numbers are fairly similar.
