Is investing in a press release site a good approach?

MC once said that links from press release sites doesn't matter much, many agreed with him but still felt that the press release content picked by other reputable sites can still help. But still it can get you traffic by coming to top in serp. One of my competitor who has just posted a recent news on a press release site, his news item is coming on top for a keyword, and since the news contain links it brought the traffic to their site. Since most of reputable press release sites are paid, Is investing in press release site a good approach ?

I'd say it is - if you are doing with real news and the purpose is to get attention from the press. Done properly it can return a lot of attention and then links from various press sources.

I've tried a lot of different paid press releases and don't find them to have any direct effect on the rankings of the sites concerned.

A few deliver a dribble of traffic over time.

You only really win with PR if they go viral and are picked up by the regular media as Tedster says.

If you are doing PR to boost your page rank then it's a waste of time.
