Geo targeting via a country specific extension

Is it an advantage to setup a new domain with a geo targeted extension to get ranked better in that specific country?

according to google the ccTLD is the strongest available signal for geotargeting content.

Phranque is right, but Google has just recently issued a new list of "Generic" ccTLD's that would negate the signal described above...

Thanks for the replies. We are located in the US and have some news and information which I believe some people in Australia for example would find interesting. We are nowhere to be found there. How do we change this?

assuming you are on a gTLD you can geotarget a section of your domain in GWT at the subdomain or subdirectory level.
if you geotarget at the subdomain level you can host that subdomain in australia.
you should also create your content and follow a link-building strategy with australia in mind.
