301 Domain Redirect and Google Webmaster Tools

12:48 am on Apr 18, 2013 (gmt 0)

I just did full website.net to website.com 301 redirect. When I was adding website.com in webmaster tools and telling google that .net address moved to new location, I was promted to add and verify website.net (before only www website.net was added).

So I added it, set www. version as prefered and now I see that both have been set for the move.

My question is, shall i remove request for the non www version or just leave it as it is ?

Anytime you do an "Address Change" they will ask you to verify both and setting one sets the other. You can leave them as is, there will be a site "account" for both www and non-www and both .net domains will point at your preferred .com domain.

welcome to WebmasterWorld, rocco1999!

i would have GWT verified for example.com, www.example.com, example.net and www.example.net to track any issues with each of the hostnames.

if necessary, add an exception to your sitewide redirect so google can verify those hostnames.

What about google analytics now that domain has migrated? Do I just add a new .com site there and leave the old .net or can I update .net to .com there as well ?

You'll want to keep your historical records? Change the .net to .com if it lets you - it's been a while since doing what you're doing and it's hard to remember if analytics lets you change the domain on a site you're tracking.
