Will it be safe to change navigation URLs?

I currently use the following format for several of the links in my navbar:

example.com/widgets.php?t=1

But now I want to use mod rewrite so that the format is like:

example.com/most-recent

Before I make the change, I wanted to ask if this will cause any ill affects with Google? They change their algorithms so many times each month that I can never keep up with what they deem good and bad.

Thank you!
.

Link to the new URL you want users to see and use.

Redirect requests asking for the old URL over to the new URL.

There should be no long term problem; sometimes there is some traffic loss in the short term.
