I am personally seeing different results on google custom search and firefox search (such as firefox start page) which is probably google custom search as well

What exactly is Foxstart.com?

One of the Penguin hit websites I've been working on, is showing a massive difference on the foxstart.com results but I don't know if that's just a location thing or what.

One major term is on number 18 on Google.com but number 2 on foxstart.com, and THE major keyword is up from 8 to 2. After a number 1 position pre Penguin.

we've been reporting changes for about a week in another thread. In Foxstart, I still see loads of press releases in my niche, and the infamous website about fungus still ranking in the top 100 for financial terms. Surely, this isn't the new Penguin, because it still fails.

^ agreed. Sites based on seo-acquired links that were penguined before are showing top positions on there in my niche. No way that will stick IMO.

Foxstart.com has nothing to do with Google algorithm updates. They are not old or new results. It's their own independent SE so of course you will see different results....

They show the Google logo directly above the search box.

Old results, ( which is why you don't see "cache" or "date" or "preview" ) .. foxstart.com runs "adsense" ( custom search version ) over the top of results..

Adwords have the beige background ( unless G are tweaking colours, but they always have a colour background when they are "on top" )..adsense does not .."on hover" tells you these are adsense ads..if you hadn't already guessed..;)

I ran a test with a short domain name which I own and which only went live a year ago ..no results returned even as searched as example.com..( checked the first ten pages ..these "results " predate it, so are pulling from at least 12 months ago.. ) it is getting loads of G traffic daily ..and on normal searches on G is at #1 ..it is an EMD ..

Tested some other things launched less than a year ago, same results ..old data set..

All sites running "custom search" can use the "logo"..doesn't mean they all use current data sets to provide their custom serps ..many do not..IME the majority do not..

I don't see anybody suggesting the results were related to algo updates. And they're quite clearly not in independent search engine.

The inference from the thread title " has penguin 2.0 started ?", is that of an aglo ( penguin ) "update"..this way rumors are started, and may take false wings..

edit ..interestingly ..they are mixing in some more recent dates from ebay from 2012 ( even from this month )..and some other sites..so "custom search" is now even more "customised" / personalised..

Leosghost, I was thinking the same thing, but I do see newly-created pages ranking (created within the past week). How can an old index also include new results? I also see a domain that was launched last month. I'm just thinking out loud I guess...

My new page previously hated is ranking well on that search. That's why I mentioned it. I also see other forums mentioning an update as well. As well as this a friends recently affected site is not showing on those results. Which gives me hope that its new data

The "precise data" set that they are calling to appears to use their identifier ( looking in their javascript ) as..

I use the term "precise data set" "loosely" ( yes I know ..it is the Irish ;) as it is probably calling to a "mixer" in a similar way that AOL users get a subset of the "main data set"( if one can even use such a term with the way G is now set up, thinking about it , one probably cannot ) and then, the AOL set is refined /personalised for each AOL user depending on all the usual GEO IP , signed in or out of G, search history etc..

The Javascript from G is reading my cookies..( some of their js is crystal clear ) for example it reads to see if "safe search" is "on" or "off" ( I used "off" ) ..it reads "is history set" and then "sets it" ..even though on direct G search I am set to not use "history"..various other things in there too ..always fun reading and attempting to decrypt what G is doing with jscript :)

I agree that penguin has moved over the last 7 days ( I've been watching the movements on some specific sites that have been making minor tweaks which I advised, they are paying off in upward movements, as expected ) ..but I don't think it is safe to use a custom search page as an indicator of widespread major iteration of Penguin ..yet..

That said ..it has to show up somewhere first :), but "custom search" adsense pages would seem a very odd place..

But then this mix of old data sets and new data, and partial data is unusual..

I'm seeing what looks like old results too, and my competitors that were heavily hit for horrible back link profiles are back in first position. Although I would take these results over the current ones.

Further test shows it is indeed mixing old and current data , and they change slightly with each enquiry..now a page that I was watching earlier this afternon on "direct G serps", and which had risen, and was not in the results on foxstart, has entered the first page at number 10 ( previously on direct G serps it was around page 4 due to penguin, today it made page 1 at number 6 ) ..so some "calls" from foxstart are indeed accessing data sets which are in movement on penguin related issues..

I should add that the page in question was changed exactly 6 days ago in response to my advice..the result for that page on both "direct G serps" and foxstart says "6 days ago" ..

edit ..after a few refreshes it will now include the less than year old domains, but not every time , so it is using a more diverse / customised set of data sets than the "direct g serps"..weighted, apparently, to the older ones..

took me a while to add that as I wanted to check something with another browser, fired up konqueror, hit go , and launched an old session with 300 tabs open ! added to the 200 or so open on this Opera and the 200 or so open on firefox on this machine ..freeze ! and mandatory reboot :: note to self..next time double the RAM to 8 gigs before trying that ::
