Is this news anyway related to their search engine?

@indyank - probably not, but I'll have a go at making it so.

What incentive is Google providing with G+, and innovations like this to get them adopted by webmasters for users?

There is no connect between G+ and "trust" resulting in rankings improvement, as I understand from Matt Cutts @ SMX earlier this year. Yet.

But wait. Unlike other projects, Google must surely be commited to supplying value adds in this space, and is looking to be in this one for the long haul on a major scale, or it is going to be badly compromised in the social space.

I can see Google being wary of spam abuse with G+ and it's add on's. But it is strengthening [ too slowly in my opinion].

Is it worth webmasters investing in the promotion of this and other tools, Google?

Show us [ webmasters and visitors ] the incentive - that's my view. It's not quite there - results that are appearing in the SERPS's are often sub standard.
