Today i receive Google email :

Your account is ready for Gmail in personal search results. Help us try it.
Thanks for joining the Gmail in personal search results field trial.

We're now ready to start showing you relevant email and content from Gmail next time you search on Google.

These results are only visible to you, so you need to be signed in, and the pages are transmitted over SSL-encrypted channels, the same security protocol used in Gmail.

We would love to hear what you think, so please click on "Give feedback" on these results to let us know. You can also visit our Web Search forum to connect directly with other field trial participants. Remember that you can visit the field trial page at any time to leave the experiment.

Thank you!

After sitting with this news for almost a month, I finally think I get it. Google's afraid of Apple - specifically Siri in this case. In order to be a highly useful "personal assistant" the ability to surface email content in search results could come in very handy. Think restaurant reservations and travel plans, etc.

Ironically, it was a TV ad for Siri that made this particular light bulb come on for me.

Agreed..I think that the nightmare scenario for Google would be if Apple decided with what they have and are learning from siri, to either go into search not just restricted to idevices, or with that mountain of money , to buy Yahoo or facebook, or something equally audacious and heart stopping for the plex..
