Today's Google logo, in honor of Eadweard J Muybridge's 182nd birthday, is a tribute to the man whose 1878 "Horse in Motion" photographic series was the forerunner of modern motion pictures. Several variations of the particular technique he used, of using fixed multiple still-cameras placed along the line of motion to capture individual frames, were developed into a technique called "bullet time", which was used in "The Matrix" films.
Muybridge was also a superb still photographer, and his 1870s series of large format photographs of Yosemite and Central America are among the great landscape photographs of the period.
Google's done an impressive job with the animated logo. The Wikipedia Muybridge bio is worth a read... [
