I have my homepage optimized for the keyword "green widget". However, I recently created another page on my site that is better optimized for the keyword green widget than my homepage...

So far google still ranks my homepage for "green widget" rather than this subpage that is better optimized ( the reason is that it is stronger than this subpage which is new )

Is there anyway that someday google will replace my homepage by this subpage on the keyword green widget ?

Of course this is possible; it happens all the time. The internal page needs to gain strength and history, as you've mentioned - and real backlinks to the new internal page can help particularly well.
