I just noticed in the UK when I hover over a image which google displays in serps it automatically enlarges to a larger one - is this a new feature.

I'm not sure about google.co.uk, but this change has been on google.com image Search for a few months, now. We have a thread around here complaining about the way actual click-through rate to the website has been crippled because of the way it is coded.

I am seeing it on the main uk google serps page rather than the image search page.

OK, I see it too on regular google.com - for the image results that are integrated into the SERP. The pop-up gives you the same kind of link to the photo and its parent website that you get in Google Image Search. It may have been this way for a while. I really wasn't paying attention to this particular area.

:: grasping at straws ::
Any way this can be related to the googlebot's recently acquired habit of picking up image files with the page as referer?

How big can it get before they run into copyright problems?
