Weird Google indexing of new domain - no Home Page

I've noticed this a month or so ago with a new website, but didn't pay close enough attention, so I decided to see the process of crawling and indexing a new website closer.

Two days ago I created a small website, ~20 pages, with a new domain name (never been used before). I placed a home page link on 5-6 of my other websites pointing only to the home page of the new website. In addition, the first link on the new website's home page was pointing back to the home page, i.e. "home" link, using only the domain name as reference, not the index page itself.

The few links that I placed back to the new website were on fairly decent sites, so I knew Google would find it quite fast. And so it did, but this is where the weird thing happened:

Yesterday morning I began checking the new website using the "info:" command on Google. At first, only one page was showing from the new website, but it was an inner page. Checking every few hours since, Google keeps adding new pages to the index, but they are all internal - no signs of the home page.

And finally today, "info:" is showing all pages of the new website, except for the actual home page, to which all the links point, both internal and external.

Is this normal? I never really paid much attention to this, but it seems super weird that Google would index all pages, except the home page. I even have some of the internal pages already ranking, albeit towards the 20th page, for some title keywords.

I would really like to know what you guys think about this.

Check both of these searches:

site:www.example.com

site:example.com -inurl:www

One should return nothing.

That happened to a couple of new sites I launched last year; took about six weeks and it finally got sorted.
