Blog feature to "goose" the SERP position

I'm considering incorporating a blog into one of my older sites. My thinking is that regular, frequent posts containing updated and "minty fresh" content might boost traffic to the site because a new post might appear fairly high in the SERPs, at least for a brief time. Then, once a post has had its day (literally) and sinks in the SERPs, a new one will provide another boost. Has anyone here tried this with any success?

I did this about 3 years ago and it worked to a point but I found it hard to move traffic off the blog to more retail-oriented pages. It had the added advantage of getting the site spidered quicker but ultimately I decided that it wasn't the best use of my time.

It probably depends on the competition. You may want to wait and see how the new freshness algo works, based on comments in this forum, and then jump in. Google said the new tweak could affect something like 35% of results, but didn't say how much, or how many freshness signals it wants, etc.
