SEO for Different Country Domain Extensions

I have always built websites for the U.S and Google.com. I'm going to target Google.co.uk and have some questions.

1. Is they best way to go about this to use a .co.uk domain and U.K hosting?

2. Do I need to obtain links from .co.uk websites or will U.S .com's work as well?

Working on UK clients my experience is it's best to host the site in UK and get a .co.uk domain to start with. However I never had problem rankings exact domain match (.net) that is hosted in the UK. About the link building, just make sure you attain links from relevant sites with high authority, the is the best long term SEO solution.
