According to a Google employee, when asked why the Google + search operator was removed, they replied [google.com]:-

We've made the ways you can tell Google exactly what you want more consistent by expanding the functionality of the quotation marks operator. In addition to using this operator to search for an exact phrase, you can now add quotation marks around a single word to tell Google to match that word precisely. So, if in the past you would have searched for [magazine +latina], you should now search for [magazine "latina"].

We're constantly making changes to Google Search - adding new features, tweaking the look and feel, running experiments, - all to get you the information you need as quickly and as easily as possible. This recent change is another step toward simplifying the search experience to get you to the info you want.

Maybe part of this is Google trying to keep "no results" as low as possible - so we get all the semantic looseness and query revision, hoping that something will draw a click.

I remember trying it in exasperation after searching for an unusual word and getting the predictable "You can't possibly have meant 'hovercraft' so we've given you the results for 'hooverville' instead".

Infuriating isn't it!

I wish that you could search for "word/phrase 1" + "word word/phrase 2" with each phrase separated by other content.

I believe a search for the following does what you're asking:

"phrase 1" * "phrase 2"

Because "*" is the "match anything" operator.

I don't think a trailing + as in Google+ would have clashed with +Google, so I don't think was a reason. It could be some efficiency in processing a query where they don't have to loop through the code that tested for a plus.

I am surprised that so many people were searching for single words in quotes for some time.

How do you *exclude* words from Google search results? Let me guess... parenthases?

Exclude a -word with a preceding hyphen.

Sorry, I was being facetious, and trying to point out the consistency of their search operators.

I'd also expect
!word
to make something happen, but haven't tested it.

Welcome to my world. And I was netmeg before there was a Google.

I always understood quotes to mean something different than the plus sign, which is why it's aggravating to me. Or maybe I'm wrong. But I thought quotes meant the string exactly as it was. The plus sign meant *this word* had to be in the results, even if you played fast and loose with the others.

Yeah, it did. But then Google broke it a while back. And now they try to fix it with sticky tape.

The

He's got "site" listed three times. Or possibly g### did. It works from right to left. (OK, left to right if you're in an rtl language.)

"Shortcut" is a funny term. Which is faster: typing or clicking? One of the two gets labeled "shortcut".

So this is supposed to be the new and improved Google? We used to be able to search for words in quotes and find what we wanted. Now we have to put every word in quotes if we want that exact phrase. Welcome to the semantics jungle.

old news, been using that trick for about as long as they started 'correcting' my search queries.
