Branding thoughts

I mentioned on another thread that I'm now using my company name on blog comments I make, instead of my real name. The idea being that Google won't see the nofollowed link, but they will see my company name. And since my company name isn't a 'word', the more instances the better.

I'm not entirely sold on the idea of brands as an SEO, at least not as something algorithmic that I want to specifically chase, but.....

I'm wondering if inexpensive advertising - even if nofollowed, and perhaps specifically if nofollowed, might help with the idea of 'branding' and therefore ranking. Find a bunch of websites, offer them a few bucks for a nofollowed ad.

On one hand, some of my moneyed competitors have spent money stupidly on advertising in years past and I don't think it's helped them.

On the other hand, I have a site that has a bajillion nofollowed links using the site name, and no dofollow links. The domain is wordAwordB, and it ranks #1 on the search wordA wordB. I'm not certain that it's because of my domain name being an unlinked citation everywhere or not, but I'd be prepared to consider the idea.

Thoughts?

I know that some Google patents mention a trust metric for the kinds of business that advertise on that site. I appreciate that this runs in the opposite direction from your idea, but it is an indicator that Google does watch ads. So I wouldn't be surprised if where you advertise makes a difference to how Google sees your "brand".
