Panda and Bad Backlinks

Hit by Panda in February, nothing new there. But checking backlinks, I see that our site has links from very dangerous places, sometimes with safe domains - such as EDU. I can't see the links anywhere in our stats, but they appear in online backlink checkers.

Am I missing something?
Are we being targeted by a hacker/competitor - I would not have sought links to any of those places
I can't see any of those links in my logs. How do I limit the damage they do?
Should the backlink checkers be trusted?
What's going on?

Can you explain what you exactly used to check your baclinks?

Where were your back links on those pages? In context, blog comments, articles dumps.

Answering that would be the first step.

You should check backlinks with Google Analytic. Find out the details of your backlinks then you can sure.

However, Google Analytics is only going to show backlinks that actually send traffic. Webmaster Tools is the place to see a long list of backlinks, whether they are sending traffic or not.
