Not sure if this has been spotted or mentioned before... Yesterday evening (Monday, Aug 15) was the first time it happened to myself.

When running a basic search query with a cityname (like cityname handyman reviews) in it, the mobile Google browser automatically switched to the "Places" tab, showing 100% places map listings, that were automatically adding 10 new results each time I neared the bottom of the result page.

In order to find actual web results, required a manual click on the "Web" tab. It was the first time I noticed it.

I can see how the "average" user might be served by this, but the power user and the site owner will not be happy with this change at all. It would be another way that regular organic results get less exposure.
