What should I look into to maintain top ranking?

Hi,

I am ranking in the 1st position of Google SERP for highly competitive Keyword in my niche. After getting 1st position I stopped doing promotional activities for that respective keyword then its dropped to 3rd position.

So now my question is when a site is in 1st position for a particular keywords should i still do promotional activities for that respective keyword?
or what factors should i look in to in my site with respective that keyword to stay longer time in that serp. position

How long did it stay 1, how much of traffic you have lost? Probably start building links, if you are in Tech related niche, its easier to get some good guest blog posts.

Did all your competitors stop their "promotional activities" too? If not, well then keeping the #1 spot might be more difficult.

promotional Activities:

1)placing link in relevant industry sites
2)directory submissions
3)Social bookmarking sites

It stayed their for almost 1 month

Then you need to continue with what you were doing to be in position 1, it looks like you stepped off the gas and another site overtook you

Go back to doing whatever you were, try to find out your competitors activity and do slightly more than them
