Yet another PageRank update

Check your pageranks everyone (not that you should be focussing too narrowly on this metric) as they appear to have changed yet again. I wonder if Google will keep on updating this and perhaps blasting in some random numbers there as well to keep everyone guessing. Perhaps this is just the dust settling from the previous update.

The last couple of toolbar exports were followed by a period of changes and jiggling around. I don't know why, but it seems to be part of the process these days.

As of this morning, the page ranks for all 3 of my websites went back up to where they were a month ago and prior. It was only 1 notch back up for each, but that's where they've been for years.

I was seeing a PR9 for Google, now it is back to PR10.


I feel like these toolbar PR changes are similar to watching the sun move across the sky. Technically it is an activity but not a very productive one.

My pagerank rolled back and all my traffic that was lost to Panda 2.1 has roared back with it.

I guess the previous pagerank update had a few "bugs" that this one has corrected. ESPNCricinfo, which is the most authoritative website for Cricket used to be PR 3 sometime back presumably because they have a prominent 'Sponsored Links' paid links section on their pages. In the previous update, their PR shot up to 7. With this update though, it has come down to 4.

My PR changed from 3 to 2 but my ranking gets higher these days. One of my competitor stay remain at PR5 but his ranking dropped. For me this PR update is a nice demotion.

My homepage PR went from 5 to 6 in the last update and all my new internal content pages went from n/a to PR 3. Now my homepage dropped back to 5, but at least I kept the PR increases on my internal pages.

I thought so too, but they just moved the link to the very bottom now.

They reversed the PR stretch of last month. Most every site I see is back to where it was last month.

You CAN get to Google.com from Canada if you log out of your Google account, when logged in however they don't provide a link and redirect you to .ca quite effectively.

Private browsing while logged out is in order, Google has too much information already and trying to limit users access to data is a bit much. You should be able to access ANY free/open website you want from anywhere, otherwise it's censorship.

Woops, I take that back, even with cookies cleared and private browsing on Google will redirect all Canadian searches to google.ca.

What a bunch of phooey.

Workaround, though I'm sure they'll patch it, is to look up google.com ON google.ca and hit the cache button and search from there. Those searches aren't redirected.

Ours returned to normal, back up a notch. I thought it was odd that it dropped. Nice to see even if only cosmetic. ;-)

Home pages went back to the old PR, but some internal pages kept the higher PR so I ended up with having some internal pages with PR higher then home page.

Who knows, it may continue changing until it settles.

Yes - it is the visible external sign of the internal difference that built Google. And that difference (the internal, daily maintained number) still matters a lot - so much so that it also matters to other search engines, too.

Confirmed pagerank update. Only some pages (the most important ones) have gone back up, others have remained the same while a couple rightfully went BACK down. The last update made little sense somehow. The dots seem to connect again.

I believe there was a miscalculation in the last update.

There was no miscalculation or rollback. The latest toolbar PR is simply more recent than what was previously shown. Vanessa Fox wrote an excellent article [searchengineland.com] explaining how Twitter bungled their code infrastructure, causing the toolbar to reflect a PR of Zero. Twitter fixed the issue and Google did a refresh of the toolbar data to reflect this.

A Google spokesperson told us:

“Recently Twitter has been making various changes to its robots.txt file and HTTP status codes. These changes temporarily resulted in unusual url canonicalization for Twitter by our algorithms. The canonical urls have started to settle down, and we’ve pushed a refresh of the toolbar PageRank data that reflects that.
