Does Google give webmasters a few days to contest a DMCA?

Can someone with knowledge of this explain what procedure Google go through when they receive a DMCA to remove results from their index.

I've been going through this (utterly painful and depressing) process this week and a few pages/docs/pdfs have been returning 404's a day or so later, which got me thinking that Google has been contacting the hosts somehow.

as removal from the google index is obviously a serious matter, it would make sense for google to contact webmasters, perhaps through postmaster/webmaster email addresses, and give them a few days to contest the DMCA.

anyway, I'm guessing. Does anyone know?

Google's procedures have been inconsistent in recent times, from what I hear. It seems to depend on whether the party filing the complaint - or the site they're complaining about - has a problematic history of abusing the process. It also seems it might depend on whoever actually handles the specific complaint.
