Should you focus on building links to the domain (.com) or to the particular page that you want to promote (.com/red-widget.html)?

Pay attention to both. Natural links that point directly to internal pages with specific and strong content are a very good thing.

If the site navigation circulates link equity in a balanced way, then other pages all get benefit. It doesn't help much if you have backlinks pointing to essentially orphaned interna; pages ;)

Many people will link to your home, instead of the specific page. Especially big media. On that basis, I say build deep and let the home links gather naturally.

Definitely - i've been buildilng deep links with success. Now if only I wasn't forced to build links...
